Search Engine Optimization, SEO for short seems to be the regenerated buzz topic in the industry at the moment.
The reality is SEO has been around for as long as search engines have. Admittedly this buzz has come at a perfect time for me as I am currently building on my blog and I have a few other sites in the pipelines, some of which I will be launching before the end of the year. It’s helpful to know some SEO techniques upfront so I can implement them in the blueprint of my sites instead of reverse building. You may find some of this stuff useful for yourself.
I am still learning this SEO stuff and a lot of what I have learned so far comes from SEO Networker which is the brain child of Raymond Fong and Ferny Ceballos, these guys really know their stuff on SEO. If SEO is your thing go over and check them out.
Here is a little of what I have learned and implemented straight away. If you haven’t you should try this out also.
Silos
The concept behind ‘Silos’ is very similar to actual silos you may have seem on farms. A silos is a place where you gather relevant themed information in one place.
I have added an image to help explain.
SEO Silo Example
As you may be aware I’m a big fan of free marketing methods. I have created a separate page on my site which is dedicated to it. When I write a new article or post where the content is based around free marketing methods I will put the corresponding link to it on this page. Here is why it is wise to do this.
- Google loves seeing grouped themes within a site. It means the searcher will be getting more value for their search result than what they were originally looking for.
- The visitors to your site will be able to navigate to what they really want more efficiently.
- It is good practice for you to get your site in a correct structure which is more user friendly and feeds the search engine spiders with exactly what they are looking for.
There is much more to this SEO technique and you can drill down in to keywords and link architecture, but I found this a good easy place to start.
How To Start A Silo Structure
- Add a page to your site. The name of this page should reflect a keyword which you want the page to rank for in the search engines. As you can see I have chosen Free Marketing Methods, you can chose anything which suits your needs, e.g. MLM Coach, MLM Training, Copywriting Course etc.
- Link your relevant articles and posts to this page. You can take it a step further and subdivide the page into smaller categories. I can put a sub-directory on the page for Social Media Marketing, or Article Marketing. As long as it’s a natural flow of how you would want the user to travel through your site, it has to make sense to the user. It would be pointless for me to put a link to a Pay-Per-Click article on a Free Marketing Methods page.
- Write a generic description outlining the contents of the page. People need to know what the page is about. In your description you should mention your keyword, don’t over do it though as that can work against you.
- Update your page with new relevant content links each and every time you have a new post or article, search engines love sites with lots of content especially if the content is well structured.
Did You Find This Useful?
Like I have said SEO is a massive topic, I intend to tackle it piece by piece. I hope you found this tip helpful and if you chose to implement this SEO technique into your sites I am sure you will see an increase in traffic.
Please feel free to leave comments or even more SEO ideas. I love to here from you.
To your success
Dwayne
