MLM Vs GPT

Is MLM dead?

Did the internet kill it?

Is GPT the answer to MLM?

It’s the great acronym debate flowing over from 2008/9 into 2010. Many would say GPT has won the battle, but I can see a shift starting to happen

Let’s take a look at the history of this great debate.

The Death Of MLM

As we all know MLMs (Multi Level Marketing) are a dream making business system. They have been around for many years and have fulfilled many dreams but they took a hard knock with the rise and rise of the internet.

The internet is the powerhouse in marketing, there is no better medium by which you can get your content under the nose of your targeted audience, NONE. MLM didn’t catch on to this in sufficient time, in-fact they fought against it. They didn’t want their representatives using the internet to promote their businesses. << Big Mistake

The Birth Of GPT

GPT stands for ‘get paid today’, which sounds great, doesn’t it?
Savvy entrepreneurs saw the demise of the MLM industry and ceased the opportunity to use the internet to its fullest to as a tool to fulfill other entrepreneurs dreams. Clever as there are still millions of us who know the rat race is not for us.

They created valuable products which have a high buy in ‘top tier’. Once a person buys this top tier product they gain the right to also sell the product on to others. Typically you can find these products going for $2,000 – $5,000 and beyond. The beauty of this is when you make a sale you get your commission straightaway, direct in your bank account.

E.G. – on a product which cost $2,000 you can earn $1,000 paid directly into your patiently waiting, ever thankful bank account. It’s likely that you get paid first even before the company!

GPT businesses isn’t about having a downline. Once you have made a sale it’s is up to the buyer what they want to do with their latest purchase. If they are smart they will do what you did and sell sell sell. But that is their decision. You do not have to ‘baby-sit’ them, or hold their hand and walk them through the whole process.

Some GPTs do have 1 – 2 levels upon which you can make residual money from but the reality is those people in your downline are now your direct competition. Why would you want to make $500 when you can make $1,000 from the same person?

The MLM Vs GPT Debate 2010

Now you are up to date. In my opinion GPT won the first battle. The bottom line is you make a lot more money for less work and you make that money a lot quicker than you would with MLM without having to hide what you are doing from your companies eagle eyes.

BUT and this is a BIG BUT. GPT is not residual income. When you stop putting in on your business you stop getting out of your business. In GPT you have to be continually working, marketing, promoting your business to make it work.

MLM money per sale is much much smaller, between $5 – $100. It takes a lot longer to be making $10,000+ a month and you need a downline who you have to train and invest your time into.

Now here’s that BIG BUT again. When MLM is done properly, over time you can make $10,000+ every month residually. All the work is already done. Your $10,000+ is secure (well as secure as the company). If you decide to take a month off, heck go for 2, 3, 4 months you will still make your $10,000+ per month. This is the old ‘check-hook’ which MLM will always have over GPT.

MLM is the long game, marathon money. Stick at it and you can truly live the ‘hands-free’ dream.

The Shift MLM Thinking

The MLM think tank has had a shift in thinking forced upon them. More and more they are embracing the internet (better late than never). This means you can use all you have learned about marketing online and fully apply that to your MLM business without having to hide behind a curtain. << That’s Great News

There are new MLM’s whose main base and form of distribution is via the internet. The internet can’t be ignored. Any business which isn’t going to embrace it isn’t going to last long especially in todays ecomonic climate. So MLM are wisely pulling up their socks and fighting back and this is where the great debate is currently at.

Which will win, who knows. It’s in our hands, we will decide one way or another or maybe there is room for both to co-exsist. The benefits of both are obvious. Both can provide you with the lifestyle you want. Both take your time, daily activity and personal growth. << Hummmm, Both…

How About This For A Plan

I’m sure you have thought of this, all smart people have. Why not do both? Not at the same time, but consider this. Join an MLM (if you’re not already part of one). Build your MLM business to a successful level. This will provide you with time and money to invest in a GPT ;-) .

Hey Dwayne,

Maybe it could go both ways?

Start with GPT?

Hmmm…

I agree with your point of view.

People should consider both. I think
some people brush off the power of
traditional MLM.

But with a powerful strategy like GPT
done right. It's a powerful one-two punch.

Not sure why it was saying your server was
down yesterday. Must just be a North America/ UK
thing.

But this rocks.

Hey J

Thanks. The transatlantic cross may of been proving difficult yesterday. The main thing is you got here in the end.

Doing both is definitely a firm strategy. Which one gets done first will depend on your vision and goals I guess.

It was actually yesterday's post I wanted your opinion on, but that's cool, thanks for passing by.

Hi Dwayne,

This is great! I never heard the term 'GPT'. I think it's great to have a mixture of both. But you can't forget that MLM is only the ultimate way to create that income without having to sell anything down the road. Just like you mention, if you decide to take a month or year off. You still get paid…

Chat with you later…

Hi Dwayne,

I think the absolute best way to do it is by doing both:
The GPT is the marketing system to generate leads for the MLM downline.

Using both allows you to get paid today while you're building your long-term, residual income through MLM.

That's what the book I'm writing is about — how to get paid today and build your business for tomorrow.

Great article!

What's up Dwayne…Hands Down, Great Article.
MLM can be a long term process I agree..but in the end! The Lifestyle is what makes it worth it.
GPT is also good..but most people really cant come up with the Start up.
Especially with some of these Cash Gifting Programs…

All and All they can both be profitable and the keys words to both styles would be..When Done Correctly!
Thanks for the Article Bro…

Hey man, thanks for sharing this great article. For me personally, I would choose GPT because of the benefits you will get from the start. But the problem with GPT is its way expensive than a normal MLM. The problem also with MLM is that once you will loose your downlines, you will also loose your income. But here's my point: network marketing was built so that the average Joe can achieve his financial goals. It is the only way for an average person to earn more money. So if you want to earn big money right away and you have a capital to invest and dont like to handle huge downline, then GPT is right for you. But if you lack funds but want to manage a large group of people and want to build residual income, then go with MLM. But if you really love GPT but you lack funds, then start with MLM, build from there and invest in GPT. Hope this helps.

Dwayne,

Nice blog you have here! I found you over on Better Networker, as I had written a post on this topic on my blog as well. I'm a GPT guy personally. MLM sounds great (passive, residual income) and would be better in a perfect world but doesn't work for the masses because of inactive downlines and attrition. Just my opinion, of course!

Take care,

Steve Hawk
