Is Social Media Killing Your Internet Marketing Business?

in Internet Marketing,Social Media

Don't Let The Grim Reaper take Your Business

Social Media is great for what it is. A place to be social, meet people online, build relationships with them and help them out where you can.

What I see happening is people using Social Media as their main marketing tool for their internet marketing business. To me this is business suicide.

Yes. You can get leads from social media.

Yes these leads can convert into sales and business partners.

But how often does that happen?

Can this method of marketing be relied on to be the bread and butter of your business?

Is there a better way to grow your business other than Social Media?

Here Is How I See It

I put proven, statistical, marketing methods to grow my business first before anything else.

I am in business to do business. Not to grow a huge list of friends.

There are better ways to grow your business and this is where people should be spending their time.

Lets say you get 5 leads a day from Social Media. I am sure you will be able to get 50+ leads a day from other more productive marketing methods.

BE IN BUSINESS TO DO BUSINESS.

Keep this in mind.

People are not primarily on Facebook to find ways of generating extra income.

They are there to be connect with their friends and family.

They are not looking for you or your business on Facebook.

When they do search for ways to make more money they will be using good ole Google, Yahoo or Bing.

This is where YOU need to be!

Make Social Media your ALLY not your ENEMY.

TRUTH: In The MLM Business, You’re Screwing Up If…

My good friend and great marketer Eric McMillan wrote a no-holds-bar post about this topic the other day.

hey Dwayne,

I agree with you. I would much rather leave Facebook as a tool to be social and network with other people rather than as your means of marketing.

And as a result of building a relationship, if that should provide some great relationships in that process, then that is great.

Great post buddy,
Jerome Ratliff

I see where you're coming from Dwayne. Social Media is a great way to meet people, and indeed potential business partners and customers, but social media is mainly used to be social… if anything, leverage to get your valuable content out in the world of google, yahoo, and bing.

Great post!!

Dude, I totally agree! Coming from someone that made those HUGE mistakes, social media is entirely for networking with other, building friendships, and just being yourself. It's not truly a place to rely on a steady flow of leads to your business. Just like you mentioned Dwayne, “When they do search for ways to make more money they will be using good ole Google, Yahoo or Bing. This is where YOU need to be!”

Thanks for the awesome post brother! Keep on Rockin'!

Hey Dwayne

Thought provoking post

I think it is a matter of balance and what your goals are.

Have people built a great MLM team using Social Media, yes

Have people totally wasted their time, absolutely

Hey Dwayne,

That is very true that social media is great to build relationship. However, if you are not using it you are losing opportunities to grow your business. People tend to forget that Facebook is nothing more than a stinking huge database.

Do you know that you can get laser targeted leads on Facebook just like on Google, Bing, and yahoo. That is where so many of the Guru's we know of today are making a killing. They are not speaking about it because they are reaping the harvest.

As a business owner, why limit yourself to only a few selection. When you can have more and still have a productive day, week, and month.

I like to think of it as abundance mentality. Not limit myself to minimal mentality. I don't want just a slice of the pie. Let me get at least 3/4 or all of the pie if I know I can. Great topic!

Chat with you later…

Hey Dwayne,

I agree that social media shouldn’t be relied on as a primary source of leads. It’s more about building relationships. Getting a lead from some other source, and then connecting through FB, and building on the relationship, which can then lead to a business relationship… now that’s awesome! ;)

Hey Josh

I am all for using methods which work and bring results. This post is more of a guiding light for those who thing social media marketing is the only way. It isn't

I myself have got a lot of leads from social media, but I don't only use social media.

The same way I wouldn't suggest only using PPC or article marketing. They all work but if all you eggs are in one basket your business will be on very shaky ground.

Now if you combine them all in a workable, manageable way your business will have a stronger legs to stand on.

Hi Dwayne,

Social Media in my opinion is there as a platform to connect with others but for the vast majority it seems to be used as a false ego trip around how many contacts one can secure with any thought of connecting coming a distant second. What's the point? These people are not going to show up at your funeral, the vast majority probably won't even send a sympathy tweet! :) Great post.

Hey Bro,
Maybe I should have gotten you to write my post so it wasn't so blunt. I had just finished 3 days at “NO Excuses” listening to attendees talk about how social media was there primary focus for growing their businesses. I love your comment above about focusing on more than one strategy and no putting all of your eggs in one basket. I use paid traffic and SEO as my primary lead generators. My favorite thing about the paid stuff is the consistency of the leads. I know if I need to get x amount of leads for x amount of sales, I can figure the cost and time frame to make that happen with paid stuff. My SEO leads are like icing on the cake. I might not get any from it today, but 10 tomorrow.

Great post,
Eric

P.S. thanks for the mention

Using social media this way also ensures that you do not waste to much (productive) time on the social media sites.

Reply

Dwayne Huggins July 29, 2010 at 07:38

Good point Marcus

I see that all the time as well. People wanting to gain as many “friends” as possible to show they have a large following. I wonder how many of them they actually connect with.

Hey Mavis

Not only does it take a long time it can not be relied upon to bring in confirmed results day after day.

If Facebook and other social media aren't media for building an MLM, who are the real benefactors of that philosophy? Could it be “the people who sell information about using Facebook to build an MLM”? ;-)

20 years before the internet became popular, I was hearing “the best way to get rich is to write a book about how to get rich”.

What do you think of blogging as a way to generate leads?

Hmm Interesting, Article Dwaine gave me food for thought there! I personally have 2 Facebook accounts 1 for me, family and friends and one for my business which is Me.

I tend to join groups on facebook that are to do with internet marketing, clickbank, ebooks and making money online as I know that those are the people looking to make money online and who are likely to visit my sites!

Not that I spam my blog links everywhere as there is a certain etiquette for marketing on FB. I tend to add people from these groups as friends with a greeting like “Hey I'm Phillip, I am not here to sell you stuff! Just looking to make friends! want to know more?” or something along those lines

Another thing I find useful is offering incentives for people to visit your blog like a free eBook as it also builds trust!
I have to agree with John Zehr about writing a book on getting rich! I am actually writing my second eBook as we speak thats all about me and getting rich!

Thanks for sharing dude! Till Next Time

Hey Dwayne!

Great Post! Personally, I use a lot of strategies to promote my business (both online and offline). I like social media but you have to watch the time that you spend as it can suck a lot of time away from you. I try not to underestimate the power of anything as I have learned that what works for one person does not always work for another and vice versa.

Hope you have a blessed day!

Hey Phil

I totally get that it is possible to market on FB. I do it myself from time to time. What I don't get is how people can ONLY use FB and SM as their one and only marketing source. Thats just crazy to me.

On your 2nd book. Thats impressive!

Dwayne Huggins August 4, 2010 at 13:00

Way to go Melissa.

Some would say offline is the new online.
The key is to find the most productive marketing ways and use them to the best of your ability. Then use secondary marketing methods the back up your main!

I like it when I encounter people like you who have got a
different view from mine. It makes me see the dimension of
something and they open my eyes a bit more. You are absolutely
right, people don’t go to facebook where to find the best holiday
deal or something. I can only think of article writing as oppose to
social networking. I have written a couple of them on ezine and the
key is you’ve got to have the right phrase to use in your title,
something that will compel people to click on that link.
