As online marketers we will chew our right arm off to get some good quality traffic coming to our sites, right?

Well, what if I told you that Traffic Is Not Your Problem. What your would you say in response to that?

Ok, what if someone who knew this industry more extensively than me told you that traffic was not your problem, what would you say to them?

You see there are things you can do to get traffic (and lots of it), PPC, SEO, Social Media etc. The real issue isn’t getting the traffic. The problem is keeping the traffic you get entertained.

Stop The Blog Leakage

Today I am going to talk about a money making blog rule that I picked up a while ago.

Now, I’m not normally one for blog rules. I believe your blog should be about you and you should run it how you want to run it. However having a lawless blog will only lead to, well, lawlessness. Some rules are therefore needed.

If making money from your blog is your thing, here is a little rule that will help you with making money from the same people over and over again. I am sure you know that there is no better customer than a returning customer.

Money Making Blog Rule

NO LEAKAGE

What does no leakage mean?

Quite simple really. You spend countless hours marketing your blog, driving traffic to your blog and building relationships with the readers of your blog.

What you don’t want to do now is have a link on your blog which goes to a page which doesn’t benefit you.

No Leakage -  Only link out to site where by you will be financially benefited.

I’m not talking about links in your content leading to more related content. That is a good things to do, increasing the value of your content to the reader.

I am talking about ads which do not benefit you financially in any major way, like Adsense banner ads and such things.

I know some people will disagree with me on this and that is fine.

Your blog is your home. Your readers are your fans, why would you want to send them to another site which you cannot vouch for all for a measly $0.05 – $1 per click.

You should only be sending your readers to your own affiliate pages where you stand to make money $10+. Or your own products sales pages where you will make 100% of the money.

Don’t let your readers leak away form your blog. Send then only to sites that will bring them real benefit.

This is where your return customer is born. If you sell them something which they get good value from they will come back to you again to see what else you have to offer.

If you send them to a flimsy site promising cheaper home insurance or similar (with loads of hidden costs) they will not thank you or appreciate you for it. And they wont be back to buy or consume your content again, all for the sake of $0.50 (approx).

[Note] If you have a high traffic blog and I’m talking 10,000 – 50,000+ visitors a day then adsense type ads could bring you a lot of money.

10 Huge Blogging Mistakes

When I started blogging, like most I didn’t really have a clue what I was doing and so inevitably I made many blogging mistakes, some of which I am going to share with you today.

I don’t mind making the mistakes now as I have learned how to drain the knowledge out of them from them. This is an essential ingredient to being successful. Making mistakes and LEARNING from them.

I want you to learn from my blogging mistakes so that you won’t have to go through them yourself.

Blogging Mistake 1

NOT SELECTING THE CORRECT NICHE

People blog for all reasons, but if you want to make money from your blog you need to carefully select the niche in which your blog is going to exist.

Not selecting a niche will mean you are not attracting the people you want to your content, this will lead to you not making any money from blog at all.

Your content will be all over the place as you wont have 1 place to give your full attention.

Selecting your niche means you will be able to focus your blogging content exactly the information that your niche needs.

Solution – Find a niche which you will be able to talk about for a long time. Find a niche which people (apart from yourself) is interested in. Make sure the niche has people who spend money in it (the more of these there are, the better).

Blogging Mistake 2

NOT DOING INTENSIVE AND ONGOING KEYWORD RESEARCH

With out keyword research you are just hoping your content will turn up on the 1st page of Google. And you maybe right. It probably will. But it wont be there on any keywords that matter or any keywords that are being searched for. In all this will be pointless.

With your niche selected you will want to find all the keywords which people interested in your niche are using to search with. The more of these you have the more valuable your content will be to your readers, and the more targeted your SEO traffic will be.

Solution – Use Market Samurai to help you find the best keywords for your niche.

Blogging Mistake 3

NOT SETTING UP YOUR BLOG IN AN SEO FRIENDLY MANNER

From the very start of your blog you have the ability to set your blog up to be SEO friendly.

Having the right permalinks set up or having SEO plug-ins (if your theme doesn’t already come SEO friendly), makes a valued difference to your on-page SEO. The more help you can give the SERPs in finding your content the better it is for you.

Blogging Mistake 4

NOT PUBLISHING FRESH CONTENT REGULARLY

An ideal situation will be to have fresh, keyword rich content published on your blog 1-5 times a day. The SERPs will send bots to sit on your blog and wait for you to hit the publish button. Your content will be indexed in minutes.

However, I live in the real world and I know doing just 1 blog post a day can be very demanding. But you should aim to do at least 2-3 blog post a week.

People expect to see change when they come to a blog. If your blog has not been updated from when they were last there they will think that you are not a serious blogger and they may not return.

The search engine bots will also put your blog on a ‘non-urgent’ list. Not a good list to be on.

Solution – Set a realistic blogging schedule. You will need to set aside time for research, idea development and editing. With a schedule you will know what you need to work on and when, instead of just sitting down at your computer starring blankly at the screen.

Blogging Mistake 5

NOT DRIVING TRAFFIC TO YOUR BLOG

There are 3 kinds of traffic. Paid, SEO and social media. You can do all 3 or you can just do 1 of the 3, but doing 0 will get you 0.

Unless your name is Lady Gaga there is no way you can set up a blog and leave it to its own devices. You have to let (the right) people know that your blog exist and it has great content on it, otherwise it will become the best blog in the world which no one reads.

Solution – Find a marketing method which suits your time, budget and blog (PPC is a very expensive way to generate traffic for your blog). Once you have a method which is producing traffic for you, get it to run as automatically as possible then move onto the next traffic generation method.

Blogging Mistake 6

NOT GETTING QUALITY BACKLINKS

I am guilt as charged with this one.

Off-page SEO (the more powerful kind) is based on your keyword selection and volume of backlinks you have pointing back to your blog. (I really need to get more quality backlinks (note to self)).

Now, not all backlinks are the same. If you got 1 backlink from apple.com it would be worth 100+ times more than a backlink from a newly created blog or article directory.

Apple.com have a PR 9 which is extremely high. Most new blogs or article directories have a PR 0. The link juice difference is huge. The higher the PR the better the juice.

Solution – Find as many high PR site (PR 5 and above), which are related to your niche and get a backlink from them.

Blogging Mistake 7

NOT NETWORKING WITH OTHER BLOGGERS

This is a huge mistake. Other bloggers especially those who are more successful than you have valuable information which they will only be to happy to share with you.

This information will cut your learning blogging curve in half if not more than half.

The better the at blog network you get the more traffic you will acquire.

Solution – Network with more successful bloggers than you, become their fan. What you get back in return will be priceless.

Blogging Mistake 8

NOT BUILDING A LIST

Your crazy to leave this highly important money making stage off.

The relationship you have with your list is what will take your blog to the next level.

These people will be your loyal followers, supporters and customers.

Solution – Start building your list now. Use Aweber to assist you with it.

Blogging Mistake 9

NOT SELLING YOUR OWN PRODUCTS / SERVICES OR AFFILIATE GOODS

Selling good products or services to your readers is doing them a good deed.

You should only be selling them what they need and what you truly believe will help them get what they want.

If you have a good relationship with your list / readers there will be a lot of money to be made here. More so if you create and sell your own products.

Solution – Get to know who your readers really are. Find / create  products which will really help them get what they want.

Blogging Mistake 10

NOT BEING IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL

Your blog will not bring you riches over night.

Treat you blog like a newborn child. Nurture it, treat it well, look after it and in time it will grow into a successful value giving, money making, blog.

Solution – Create a 1 year, 3 year 5 – 10 year plan for your blog. This will give you further vision and a stronger will to carry on.

Email Copywriting Tips

This is my last email marketing installment for now. Last week I explained how you can grow your email list effectively. Yesterday I helped you to increase your email open rate and today I am going to give you 3 effective email copywriting tips which will have your readers doing what you want them to do.

The top internet marketers are making money left, right and center and at the heart of it all is the emails they send to their lists.

The reality of an email is that you want to get the reader to take action. You want them to click a link. The email content is really selling the reader on the value of clicking the link.

3 Major Email Copywriting Tips

1. Write like your having a heart attack.
Write fast, quick, don’t dwell on what the topic is. If you write with a sense of urgency it will read back the same way. This makes the reader feel like they need to see what you have to offer right now.

There is no need to explain what the clicked content is about. You just need to make them want to click the link to find out.

2. Time is not your friend.
People are a funny bunch. We like emails, but don’t like reading them. Keep your emails short and to the point. If your email is to long the reader will say, “I’ll get back to that email later”. This hardly ever happens!
Keep your email short and sweet with an unavoidable call to action.

3. Don’t use a canon to kill a rabbit.
The only outcome you want from your reader is your link clicked. Don’t bombard them with how great your content is on the other side of the link.  Give them just enough so that they will want to click the link.

Put in the main benefit or the main offer, this will be more than enough.

[Note] There are emails for all occasions. The 3 tips above are best used when you want to send your reader to another location.

I can’t stress this enough. The relationship you have with your list is what makes all the difference. A big list with no one taking action is useless. It is much better to have 10 people who are really interested in what you have to say than 100 people who don’t give a sh*t.

These simple tips are what I use and what I have noticed the big guns using in their emails.

• Write with urgency
• Keep it short and sweet with a call to action
• Keep it simple, you just want them to click the link.

Following on from my blog post last week about how to grow your email list effectively, today I am going to be explaining how you can get your emails opened without using any Jedi Mind Tricks or Copywriting Skullduggery.

Believe this or not your email open rate is effected mainly by how good your relationship is with your list.

I am sure you are on quiet a few peoples list. I am also sure that some emails you get never get opened and others always get opened.

Think to yourself why this is.

I have a good open rate of currently 71%. I attribute this to the relationship I have with my list.

I offer value that I know they want, and I reply to all my emails as quickly as I can.

Email Subject Line Copywriting Tips

There is always room for improvement.

You will find that the bigger your list gets the lower your email open rate percentage will be.

There are a couple things you can do to keep the open rate as high as possible.

1. Offer them a benefit and be very obvious with what your email is about. Your subject line could be, “How would you like to increase you email open rate” for example.
If you know your list needs, you will know that they do want to know how to increase their email open rate. They will open this email knowing exactly what they are going to get.

2. Let your list know what the kind of email it is. If it is about a blog post, put in the subject line somewhere [Blog Post] if it’s a [Marketing Tip] put that in the subject line instead.
People join your list from different sources. Let them decide whether the email is for them or not. This helps with building that all important relationship.

Try these two email subject line copywriting tips out and let me know if you see an increase in your open rate.

Relationships Matter

If you are build the relationship with your list the right way, then there will be a point where you can send an email with a blank subject line and they will open it.

Thanks For Opening My Email

By now you know that building your blogs email list is the best way to make money online. If you didn’t know, now you do.

This fact alone makes people’s CORRECT and regularly used email address very important to your blog and your business.

When you get an email address there are a number of things which stand in the way between your contact, your content and your bank account.

1. Have you got their correct and regularly used email address?
2. Have they white-listed your email address? (This ensures your email doesn’t end up and stay in their junk box).
3. Will they open your email?

How To Get Their CORRECT Email Address

In this day and age where every online marketer is a “goo|roo” of some sort people have got wise to the spamming of their inbox after they have opt-ed in on to the “goo|roo‘s” list.

To get the “free download which make you a million in 2 second pdf” they give an email address which they don’t use. (Sometimes they create an email just for these “goo|roo” opt-ins. I know I did).

They opt-in, get the pdf and they are off, never to look at another email from you. (Damn you “goo|roos”).

You will never be able to 100% avoid this, but there are things you can do to reduce the amount of times this happens to you.

• Make your free give away an eCourse (similar to my 7 day how to make money blogging eCourse). This forces them open your email at least 7 times in-order for them to get your valuable content. They will be less likely to give a bogus email address if they will have to keep login into it everyday.
  Within this time they will see that what you deliver is valuable and they will be more likely to open other emails from you.
• If you still want to give them a downloadable pdf, using Aweber you can get them to double confirm their subscription. Put the link to your pdf in the second confirmation email.
  Most people who just want your goodies and nothing else will not bother confirming the second request.

Try these ideas out. You will end up with a more interested list of people who actually want to hear what you have to say.

Your open rate and click rate will go sky high!

White-List Me

Unless your actually supplying junk, the junk-box is where you definitely don’t want to be.

As an online marketer, blogger you know all about junkmail filters and what not, but your new lead may not.

So tell em.

“Hi Great New Lead. Please add me to your safe list / address book / white-list in your email account. I will be emailing you more valuable info and I don’t want you to miss out on a single bit of it.”

Simple. Put this on the thank you page you should be directing them to, directly after they opt-in.

Always tell them exactly what you want them to do, don’t be afraid to give orders.

Open & Click Me. What’s Inside Will Blow Your Socks Off

Getting your emails opened and the links (if any) clicked comes down to 2 things.

1. How much they value you
2. How appealing your subject line, email content and call to action is.

If they really value you they will open all your emails regardless of subject line.

In our industry today there is what I call standard marketing procedures, these are things that pretty much all successful marketing online today are doing to build their business.

If you combine all these elements into your marketing you will find success in the internet network marketing industry.

1. You must absolutely start a blog
2. You must absolutely build a list
3. You must absolutely use funded proposals in your marketing
4. You must advertise (using paid and free methods)
5. You must use social media marketing
6. You should use video marketing to brand you

Those are just the basics, but if you start doing all 6 steps on a regular basis you will start to see success in your business.

Internet Network Marketing – Wrap Up

There is so much more to this puzzle, I left out the most important thing you need to find is:

7. Find yourself a mentor, someone you can identify with and someone who is willing to work with you on a personal level.

You can absolutely save yourself hundreds if not thousands of dollars just by working with people who are able to guide you in the right direction.

Finding a mentor is the most important thing to do if you are seriously thinking about getting involved with the internet network marketing industry.
